5 January 2022

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced focused inspection on 5 January 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we asked the following questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The practice appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The provider had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The provider had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • The provider had safeguarding processes and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The provider had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Staff treated patients with dignity and respect and took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The provider had effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • The provider asked staff and patients for feedback about the services they provided.
  • The provider dealt with complaints positively and efficiently.

Background

Abbey Dental is in Milton Keynes and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces are available near the practice.

The dental team includes four dentists, four dental nurses, one dental therapist/hygienist, and two receptionists. In addition, the practice shares with its sister practice, one practice manager, one business manager and the business owner. A Clinical Director provides clinical leadership for both practices. The practice has five treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with two dentists, one dental nurse, two receptionists, the business owner, the business manager and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5.30pm

Friday from 9am to 5pm

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Implement an effective system for recording, investigating and reviewing incidents or significant events with a view to preventing further occurrences and ensuring that improvements are made as a result.
  • Take action to ensure dentists are aware of the guidelines issued by the British Endodontic Society for the use of rubber dam for root canal treatment.

28 August 2013

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This was a follow up inspection to review if improvements had been made to the safety and suitability of equipment, and the checks that had been made on staff to ensure staff were suitable for their role.

We found that the required improvements had been made.

17 April 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who used the service and they told us they were happy with Abbey Dental. One person told us that they had been coming to the practice for a number of years and said "It's very good. Close to the best and I trust my dentist implicitly". We were told that if the dentist says it won't hurt, then it doesn't hurt. Another person told us they like the practice because it was clean and appointments are usually on time and another person told us the staff are very pleasant and friendly.

We found concerns with the availability and suitability of some equipment and the checks that had been made on staff.
