During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

At our inspection on 04 September 2013 we found the provider was not meeting appropriate infection control standards because some areas of the surgery unclean and there were no formal systems to monitor the quality of general cleaning. We also found some shortfalls with the way dental instruments were decontaminated, including instruments not being stored immersed in water, or rinsed in a separate sink or removable bowl in line with the provider's decontamination procedure.

On the 09 January 2014 we reviewed the evidence we requested from the provider and found the provider was meeting this standard. This was because the provider had changed its general cleaning contractor and was now monitoring the quality of general cleaning. Cleaning materials were being appropriately stored. We found that dental nurses had received updated decontamination training and their practice had been observed by the provider to ensure it was appropriate. The provider had also updated its decontamination procedures to ensure there was sufficient stock of clean dental instruments.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with told us they were happy with the care and treatment they received. They said they were given sufficient information and they were able to make decisions about the type of treatment they wanted. People said they felt staff were good. One person told us staff were "very helpful", and people who were nervous about dental treatment told us staff put them at ease. People told us it was relatively easy to get an appointment and they usually didn't have to wait long on the day. People said they felt the surgery was clean and they told us staff who treated them wore the appropriate personal protective equipment.

We found people were involved and able to make decisions about their treatment after being provided with relevant information. People were treated with privacy and dignity. We found people received treatment after an examination of their oral health needs and there were procedures and equipment in place to deal with any emergencies. Staff we spoke with knew what abuse was and how to report any concerns although they had not needed to do this. We found some shortfalls with the surgery's general cleaning arrangements and with the decontamination of used dental instruments. The provider had effective systems in place to ensure staff were adequately supported through induction, training and supervision.
