During an inspection looking at part of the service

A routine inspection took place on the 2 December 2013 which identified patients were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed by the practice. This concern was judged to have had a minor impact on people who used the service.

The provider was required to submit a plan detailing the action they were taking to ensure compliance with this standard and the date at which they would be compliant. The provider told us that they would be compliant with this standard by 16 December 2013.

At this inspection we found that the provider had taken appropriate measures to achieve compliance with this standard.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection.

2 December 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with five patients, two dental nurses, a hygienist, a dentist and the practice manager.

People we spoke with told us they were satisfied with the information they received. Two people who used the service told us that they had they had signed a treatment plan. One person said they gave verbal consent to treatment while two others did not know about a such a plan but said they hadn't had any treatment other than check-ups.

We observed that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. One person said; "I did not go to the dentist for several years as I did not enjoy the experience. Then when I had tooth problems I came here. I enjoyed the experience and have always come back".

There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies.

Effective infection control systems were maintained to reduce the risk and spread of infection. All of the people we spoke with spoke favourably about the standard of cleanliness. One person said, the practice was, 'Clean and tidy'. However, regular checks of cleaning standards were not completed by the infection control lead.

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff. One person who used the service told us that staff were, 'Excellent, very professional and friendly.

There was an effective complaints system available. All the people we spoke with told us they understood the complaints procedure. Two people said they would speak to the dentist and the other three said they would speak to staff if they had a complaint.
