During a routine inspection

We spoke to four people who used the service, the dentist, three dental nurses and two administrative staff.

People we spoke with rated the service highly. One person said "It's (the service) very good. Excellent! I'm fully informed of the costs. There is no pressure to have treatment. You only get the treatment you need." Another told us "I have no complaints whatsoever. I'm more than satisfied."

People told us they were involved in their treatment plans and their permission was always sought before any treatment commenced. We saw patients had a detailed treatment plan which they signed as consent to the treatment and costs. Staff explained the actions they would take if people with impaired mental capacity were unable to consent to treatment. Staff we spoke with were aware of the legal requirements of consent with regards to treatment for children.

We found the provider had procedures to ensure other healthcare professionals who may have been involved in people's care were kept fully informed of the outcome of the treatment. We saw from people's records appropriate referrals were made to other healthcare professionals.

The provider had appropriate information in the practice and on the website to inform people of the complaints procedure.

Equipment used was fit for purpose and regularly maintained.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with ten people attending for checks or treatment.

One person said the dentist they saw was 'excellent' and the nurses were 'very good'. They told us that the dentist explained treatment to them. Another person attending for an emergency appointment said 'the practice is comfortable and welcoming'. They explained that they felt the facilities and staff were good and they liked that the dentist told them what was going to happen.

A couple visiting the dentist said that this was the first opportunity they had for NHS dentistry. They were impressed with the patience of the dentist who was aiming to make it a positive experience for one of the people. They said it was 'a particularly good practice'. Another couple told us about the quick response from the practice for appointments and how the staff were 'lovely'.

After telling us that the 'practice is lovely' a person told us that they travelled some distance for treatment. They told us that the practice had 'saved teeth when other dentists wanted to remove them'. They said that the dentists and nurses were caring and that the 'receptionists are friendly and always speak on arrival'.

An older person explained how 'you couldn't get a nicer, kinder or better dentist' that they have all information given to them and the dentist takes time. They said they signed to consent for treatment.

The final patient we spoke with said they 'found the practice very efficient' and were 'pleased with the care they received. They told us that the practice was 'good at preserving what you have and help to achieve it'.

We spoke with staff during our visit. This included three of the dentists, two nurses and all of the reception staff. A member of staff told us they felt 'people were treated with respect' and staff 'would listen to any problems' people may have.

We saw that the premises were comfortable and the systems in place ensured good control of infection.

People told us they signed for consent to treatment and we saw records to confirm this and show what treatment they had received.
