During a routine inspection

No one knew we would be visiting that day as our inspection was unannounced.

At the time of our inspection six people lived at Swiss House Care Home. During our inspection we spoke with or spent some time with all of the people who lived there, staff on duty and the registered manager.

As some people had complex needs and were not all able to tell us about the service they received we used different methods to help us understand their experiences, including observation. We observed good interactions between staff and the people that lived there. We observed that people smiled when staff engaged with them. We asked one person who lived there some direct questions about their experience. They smiled and said, 'Yes', to both questions when we asked if they were happy and if they got on well with the staff.

We found that people who lived there were treated with respect and dignity. We saw that people's needs had been assessed by a range of health care professionals including specialist doctors, specialist nurses and the optician. This meant that staff had enabled people to have their health care and safety needs monitored and met.

We identified that people had been provided with varied food and drink options to prevent malnutrition or ill health associated with obesity and dehydration.

We found that overall the premises were warm, homely, adequately maintained and reasonably safe.

We determined that systems were used to support staff so that they would know how they should meet people's needs and keep them safe.

We saw that complaints processes were in place for people or their relatives to use if they were not happy with the service provided.

During a routine inspection

We inspected Swiss House and found that people were supported to make everyday decisions by staff at the home. People's views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care.

We saw that staff treated people with dignity and respect. We saw that staff were friendly and supportive to people who lived at the home.

People's needs had been assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. Staff were aware of each person's needs. They knew how to give care and support to meet those needs that ensured people's health and welfare was maintained.

We found that people who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse. People told us they liked living at Swiss House and they felt the staff gave them the help they needed. One person who lived at Swiss House told us they: 'Like living here'.

Recruitment procedures made sure that only suitable staff were employed to safeguard people from the risk of harm.

A quality assurance system was in place. People's views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care.
