All Inspections

21 November 2013

During a routine inspection

At the time of this inspection the registered manager informed us there were eight people residing at Surrey Court who were receiving personal care. We looked at the care records of four people who were using the service and spoke with two people who lived there. We also spoke with the registered manager, a team leader and three members of staff.

Care and support was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. One person said: 'I'm happy with the way I'm cared for' and 'I've no complaints at all'. The other person commented that staff had a 'Good regard to our independence'. A system to monitor the induction, training and supervision that all staff received was in place, to ensure that all staff received appropriate professional development. People who we spoke with told us that the staff had the right knowledge and skills to do the job. One person said: 'You couldn't wish for better staff'. We found that people were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed. People were protected from the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care and treatment because accurate and appropriate records were maintained.

During a routine inspection

People told us they were encouraged to live independently with care and support provided. People said that staff discussed their care with them and offered care and support according to their needs.

We found that people had detailed care plans in place which covered their physical, social and medical needs.

Records we looked at showed people were involved in their care, and their consent was sought before any care or treatment was given.

We found the provider had undertaken recruitment checks before staff started work. Records showed that staff were appropriately trained and supported.

The provider had systems in place which ensured people knew how to make a complaint, and ensured they were listened to.

During a routine inspection

People who use the service told us that staff respected their decisions and that they were supported and enabled to do things for themselves. They had been kept informed about a planned re-development of the premises and how this would affect them.

People told us that they received the care and support that had been agreed between them and the service. They told us that that staff always responded quickly if they pressed the call bell, so they were not left waiting for assistance. They said that the staff who visited them were all familiar to them and understood their needs, which they said was reassuring. They told us that the service was good at communicating any changes to them. Each person had been given a written copy of their individual plan of care and support.

People we spoke with said that the staff were competent and professional and that standards of care were good. They told us that the staff treated them well. They confirmed that the organisation regularly reviewed the service it provided to them and checked that they were satisfied with it. They said that there was always someone they could speak to if they had any concerns and they were confident that any issues would be addressed.
