All Inspections

During a routine inspection

We visited the office accommodation used by the service and three of the supported houses. Two of the supported houses we visited were staffed 24 hours each day. The people living in the other supported house that we visited received several hours support each week.

Some people who lived in the supported houses had limited verbal communication. They were unable to have an in-depth conversation about the care and support they received. However we talked with people in a general way and we observed how staff supported people.

We observed the care that staff provided to people. We saw staff supporting people quietly, calmly and sensitively. People were given choices about the activities they wanted to be involved in. Staff supported people to shop for and to prepare meals in the way they wanted. Where people needed assistance to eat this was provided.

Person centred care records were in place, providing informative up to date information about people.

Equipment used by people was maintained safely. Where repairs were needed these were carried out quickly.

Recruitment and selection was carried out thoroughly. This meant that the correct checks were made on staff and they had the skills needed to support people.

Systems were in place for monitoring the quality of the service people received. People living in the supported houses and relatives told us that they were well supported by the staff team.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people living in the supported houses. They said they liked their homes and staff were respectful. One person said, 'They come and support us with managing our finances and with completing forms. They are always polite.'

People we spoke with told us their routines were flexible. Staff were responsive to the needs of the people they were supporting and had time to spend with people.

Care records were in place and were person centred. Other professionals were involved where there were any health issues and this information was recorded.

The people we spoke with told us that they were happy in their home and would tell staff or family if they had any concerns. One person said, I would just tell the staff here. They would help me.'

We saw staffing levels during the inspection. Staff spoken with felt that there were usually sufficient numbers of staff available to provide good support.

People we spoke with said they were happy with the level of staffing they received. One person told us they were pleased with the flexibility of their staffing. They said, 'Our staff will always change the times they come when we want to do something special.'

Managers had an effective system to regularly monitor the quality of service. The management team completed frequent checks on the care and support provided.

There were regular meetings for people living in the supported houses and for staff to discuss the running of the houses.
