During an inspection looking at part of the service

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service. This was because people had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us about their experiences. We spoke with the relatives of three people who told us that, when they visited, their family member was always dressed appropriately. One person told us that their relative's preferences were recorded and staff took their choices into consideration when providing their care.

A member of care staff was changing the bed linen in someone's room. We asked them if that was their role and they said, " not usually but I thought I detected an unpleasant odour, so I opened the window and changed the bed linen" The care worker said it was important that people's rooms were pleasant.

Staff were observed being supportive of people. For example, one person was upset and staff comforted the person and tried to find out why they were upset.

People with communication difficulties were supported with different methods of communication. For example, people were using pictures and music to assist with reminiscence.

One relative told us that staff were professional in their approach.

During a routine inspection

People told us they liked living in the home. One person said 'as far as I know, I can do what I want ' I've never been told not to'. We observed people were encouraged to be independent. At morning coffee time, a person was encouraged to help clearing up plates, cups and saucers. People said staff met their needs and helped them. One person told us they had 'no complaints, nurses are so kind' and another 'they look after me well'. People told us they could bring up issues of concern to them. One person said 'if I'm worried, I can always talk to the staff here' and another described staff as 'the type of people who would listen to you and put it into practice'.

We observed some people's needs were not fully assessed and care plans needed development, including involving people in decision-making about their care plans. People told us laundry went missing or could be placed in other people's rooms and we observed there were not clear procedures for the naming of people's clothes. The provider had developed systems to ensure safe recruitment of staff, however these still needed to be fully implemented. People's views about the service were sought, however not all issues raised were documented to provide an overview of the service provided.
