During a routine inspection

During this inspection we spoke in private with three people who used the service, three visitors and two care assistants. We also spoke with members of the management team.

People were treated with respect and had their dignity maintained. One person told us they thought the service was "absolutely fantastic" and specifically noted that staff did not intrude upon them and they "always knock [on the bedroom door] and await."

People were involved in discussions about how best they could be supported both during their stay and afterwards. People spoke positively about the care provided and comments included "absolutely happy about the care", "I get all the help I need" and "I'm treated well".

The accommodation at Medlock Court was well maintained, clean tidy and pleasantly decorated. Comments from people using the service included "my room is excellent" and "it's a nice place to be".

Sufficient staffing was provided so that people's needs could be met if not immediately, in a timely manner. The staff were well-trained to help them undertake their tasks competently.

The home had a complaints procedure and people using the service were confident that any complaint would be dealt with appropriately. One person described the care staff as very approachable and said "you can always ask and you do not feel you're complaining or moaning and if they can put it right they will do".

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with four people who were using the service and two relatives of people using the service. Everybody spoke positively about the care and support provided at Medlock Court.

People told us that they felt involved in discussions about how they could be best supported. Several of the people who we spoke to, had stayed there for respite care on previous occasions. They all told us they were pleased to return. Comments included "nothing I can fault, I have been before and I'll come again" and "I asked to come in because it's great".

People who we spoke to said that they felt safe at the home. One person said, "I have no fear, they are very kind", another person said "that's one thing I do feel ' safe" and a visitor said, on behalf of their relative, "I wouldn't put him [just] anywhere".

People spoke positively about the staff. Comments included "the girls are all very good"; "whatever you ask them they would do it for you"; "care staff are very good. If I have anything to say I say it and they listen" and "the staff are really nice. Very friendly and they do smile".

We asked people what the best thing about the home was and one person said, "being cared for. If I were frightened of anything they would help me." A visitor told us that amongst the best things about the home was that it "feels relaxed and welcoming". They also told us that their relative had said to them "if I could stay here I would".
