During a routine inspection

Tudor Rose is the home for four ladies who have lived together since it opened. During our visit we spoke with the registered manager and a senior support worker. We also spoke with one person using the service, who talked us through her care plan. Later, by telephone, we spoke with three relatives of people using the service, to ask their views of care, and with another senior support worker.

We observed that people using the service had a good relationship with staff, who understood people's needs and supported them in a kind, friendly and respectful manner. Relatives said that their family members liked living at Tudor Rose. They said comments such as, 'They are happy together, they are like sisters together', '[Person X] thinks of Tudor Rose as her home,' and 'I cannot think of a better place for her to be.' Relatives said that if they had any concerns or problems they would call the registered manager and they were confident the issue would be responded to appropriately.

From talking with staff, observing care, looking at care records and talking with one person using the service, we found that people were supported to make to develop their independence as much as possible and to make their own decisions about their care. People's needs were assessed and risks associated with their care and welfare were identified and managed. Their care was reviewed regularly.

The home was staffed with a regular team of staff, most of whom had worked at the service for a long time. They were supported through regular supervision and appraisals, and most had completed their mandatory training.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we observed staff interacting with all the residents of Tudor Rose care home. We saw that staff and residents communicated using a variety of verbal and non-verbal methods including Makaton signing. Makaton signing is a simplified version of British Sign Language that is used by, and for, people who have a learning disability. We spoke to one resident about the care they received. The resident told us they felt positive about their care and their relationship with the staff and manager. We observed residents moving freely around the home and interacting with the staff in a relaxed way that included appropriate humour.

The residents had busy schedules on the day of our visit, with activities in the local community. Our observations took place at times when the residents were at home. We observed the residents making choices and decisions about their daily lives. We saw that resident's choices and decisions were respected by the staff.

During an inspection in response to concerns

The manager informed us that this had been discussed with them at a recent team meeting. The people using the service said they would wish to be referred to as 'The Ladies of Tudor Rose'.

The ladies of Tudor Rose communicated using a variety of verbal and non-verbal methods including Makaton signing. Makaton signing is a simplified version of British Sign Language that is used by, and for, people who have a learning disability.
