During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this inspection to check if the provider had complied with a compliance action from a previous inspection of the service. We spoke with the team leader and three care staff. We examined medication records and also checked medication stored in the home to make a judgement as to whether the provider was meeting Outcome 9 : Management of medicines and was compliant with Regulation 13 (Health and Social Care Act 2008 Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010.

At this inspection we were satisfied that people who used the service were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines. We noted that there were arrangements for the recording of medicines received, storage, administration and disposal of medicines. With one exception, medication administration charts were appropriately signed by staff and there were no unexplained gaps.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with eight people who used the service. They indicated that they had been treated with respect and dignity. One person who used the service stated, 'The staff take good care of me. They talk to me and I like them'. Another person said, 'They are really good, warm and friendly'.

We observed that people who used the service appeared comfortable and well cared for. Staff talked with people in a friendly and respectful manner. The care provided was closely monitored and regular reviews of care had been carried out.

People who used the service informed us that their care needs had been attended to and they had access to healthcare services. Assessments, including risk assessments had been carried out. Care plans had been prepared and these were reviewed regularly. We noted that the home had a varied programme of activities. A visiting healthcare professional we spoke with informed us that people were well cared for and he expressed no concerns. We however, noted that improvements were needed in the management of medicines.

Staff we spoke with were aware of their roles and responsibilities. Records indicated that staff had been provided with essential training, supervision and support.

The home had a complaints procedure. Complaints had been responded to. There was also a record of compliments which indicated that relatives of people were satisfied with the care provided.

9 August 2012

During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

The inspection team was led by a CQC inspector joined by an Expert by Experience, who have experience of using services or caring for someone who uses this type of service, and a practising professional.

We used the short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk to us.

The five people spoken to said they were able to make decisions about their care and treatment. One person told us, "staff always ask me how I want things to be done'. People told us that they liked their meals. A person said, 'all the food is great'. We asked people about the variety of food, a person said, 'there is always a choice at meal times." People were provided with a choice of suitable and nutritious food and drink. We observed that at lunchtime enough staff were available to help people to eat and drink. We observed staff knew how to meet the needs of people and understood the nutritional needs of people who use the service.

People knew they could raise their concerns with staff, and that these would be addressed. A person said, "if I am worried I can talk it over with the staff". People's personal records including their care plans were accurate, and were kept securely.
