During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out a visit to Ashdene on 26 January 2012 to follow up a compliance action made following the last review of compliance at Ashdene in June 2011. Because we needed specific information from the management to demonstrate their compliance with the essential standards, we did not speak directly with people using the service.

During a routine inspection

People said that they understood their care and the support they need. They told us that they regularly meet up with their key worker to discuss their progress and future aims and wishes.

All the people we spoke with told us that they are encouraged to make their own decisions about their daily lifestyles and to be involved in decision making about how Ashdene is run.

All the people we spoke with were complimentary about the care they receive. One person told us 'The staff are good. If I need to speak to anyone they are always there for you.' Another person said that staff are 'helpful', whilst another commented 'The staff and residents are great here.'

One person said, 'I had no confidence when I moved here but since then this has grown through achieving small targets. I am now computer literate and have gained a certificate in computing.' One person explained how with the support of staff, they have been reunited with some family members.

People said they felt safe living at Ashdene. Those people spoken with told us that everyone gets on well together.

People said that they feel well supported and cared for. One person told us, 'I can not speak highly enough of the staff. I can not believe how I have progressed so much through their support.' Another comment was 'Nothing is too much trouble for them.'

People told us that they have regular house meetings to discuss how any improvements can be made to the service. They also said they are given questionnaires to complete so that they can comment on the care and services provided. One person told us 'We held a meeting recently and discussed the laundry arrangements. We then decided to introduce a laundry rota and this has improved matters.'
