During a routine inspection

People who lived in the independent living complex set in the Gatchell House grounds were able to access additional care, services and facilities as necessary. At the time of our visit there were four people who used this additional service, we spoke with three of them, together with one member of staff and the manager.

People we spoke with said 'they do anything I want' and there was 'plenty of help when I need it'. People also said 'everyone is so nice and friendly', 'I'm very grateful to them, they help me and it's lovely of them' and 'I'm very happy here'. Staff we spoke with said 'I so enjoy working here; we have time to spend with people'.

We saw evidence that peoples' needs were assessed on an on-going basis; the manager saw people on a daily basis and a carer we spoke with said they reported back to the manager at the end of their shift. We saw the quality assurance form in the support plans which showed that the manager also completed spot checks. The support plans were updated when people's needs changed.

There was evidence that the views of people who used the service were obtained bi-annually via questionnaires. People we spoke with said that they were 'always asking me for my opinion', and they were asked 'is it ok for you'? The last questionnaires were sent out in June, there was a 30% return rate; the results showed a high level of satisfaction with the service.

During a routine inspection

Gatchell Oaks Care (Go Care) had a small team proving personal care to few fairly able people. People told us they were very happy with the care and support the received from Go care.

The manager told us that people were encouraged to do a lot of things for themselves but had support from staff with activities such as bathing and shopping. We were told this type of support helped people to be independent and the manager said 'It's about letting the service user do as much as they can for themselves, we will just wait patiently until we need to help them."

People said they found staff were flexible and willing to change the ways they provided their support. Staff told us they felt supported in their work, were encouraged to develop and had good opportunities for training.

The service kept good records which were up to date and easily accessible.

The manager regularly collected feedback from the people who used the service for monitoring the quality of service the people received.

Having assessed all the available evidence, we considered the service demonstrated how it met the safety and welfare needs of the people living in the independent elderly living complex of Gatchell House grounds.
