During a routine inspection

We spoke with both people having support from the agency. We spent time with them in the house where one person lived. During our visit the person living in the house was working in the garden and the other person talked in some detail about their life and the service from the agency. We saw they were both happy with the lifestyle the service enabled them to lead. Both were as independent as possible and were able to make choices in their life with the help of their support workers and parents.

Both service users experienced a variety of activities such as attending college, working in a cafe, socialising with friends, developing personal relationships, going on holiday and using community facilities. From the conversations we had it was clear the support workers encouraged and supported service users to be as independent as possible, in all aspects of life, and to make choices. One person had also recently moved into independent accommodation. Both had a good understanding of their rights to choice and independence. They had clearly agreed and consented to the activities they did each day and the lifestyles they had.

The service users were protected from abuse through the agency's policies, procedures and practices. They also knew how to raise issues of concern and told us of some examples of this.

The registered manager and the provider told us staff were experienced and had the right skills, qualifications and support to work successfully with the service users.

During a routine inspection

There were two people having a service from Supporting My Independence at the time of this inspection. We spent time with one of them in their own home (a 'supported tenancy') and they told us they had good support and were happy with the lifestyle the service enabled them to lead. This person told us about the choices they were able to make in their life and how they worked with the support workers to make these choices.

The parents of the other service user told us the service was reliable and flexible, and that the support workers treated the service user properly and with respect. Both service users experienced a variety of activities such as attending college, working in a cafe, socialising with friends, developing personal relationships, going on holiday and using community facilities. From the conversations we had it was clear the support workers encouraged and supported service users to be as independent as possible in all aspects of life and to make choices.

We were told staff were experienced and had the right skills and qualifications to work

with the people they were supporting.

During a routine inspection

There were two people having a service from Supporting My Independence at the time of this review. We spoke to one of them and they told us that they had good support and were happy with the lifestyle the service enabled them to lead. This person told us about the choices that they were able to make in their life and how they worked with the support workers to make these choices. Both service users experienced a variety of activities such as attending college, working in a cafe, socialising with friends and using community facilities. From the conversations we had, including that with the service user, it was clear that the service encouraged independence in such matters as personal care, meals and in some household skills.

We were told that staff were experienced and had the right skills and qualifications to work as support workers. However we were also told that staff recruitment procedures were unsatisfactory and that it was agreed with the provider that these must be improved.
