During a routine inspection

We found that people's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. People we spoke with were very satisfied with the care they received. They told us, 'The carers are really good.' People told us that they enjoyed the activities on offer. Comments included, "The activities are quite good, there is plenty going on such as quizzes and outdoor activities.'

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. People who used the service told us they liked the staff and they said their needs were met. They told us, "The staff are very, very good.'

People told us that they felt safe living in the home and felt comfortable speaking to staff if they had any concerns. Comments included, 'I feel safe living here.'

The building had a homely feel and number of seating areas had been arranged to give people variety and choice. People told us they were able to have their own possessions with them to personalise their rooms.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive. Comments form people who used the service included, "I feel listened to, I have no concerns."

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People we spoke with told us that they were involved in their care. One person said 'They gave me information about the service when I came in. They ask what you want before they give care and I can choose when I want a bath, the care is not regimented here.'

People who used the service were satisfied with the care they received although they could not remember if they had a care plan. One person told us "I do not know if I have a care plan but my needs are met and I am not rushed about. The staff treat people really well." We found that the care plans were detailed and had been regularly evaluated.

We found that appropriate arrangements for the ordering, recording, administration and safe handling of medicines were in place.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke with people living in the home during our visit. They all told us they were happy living in the home and were satisfied with the care they received. Comments included 'I am well looked after,' 'When I wasn't very well they really looked after me,' 'They know what they are doing' and 'They help me to move about, there are always two staff to do this.'

People told us they received their medicines when they needed them. Comments included 'I get my tablets on time,' 'We get our tablets when we need them' and 'They put my cream on everyday.'

People told us they liked the staff and felt they were well cared for. Comments about the staff included 'The staff are thoughtful in everyway,' 'The staff are excellent, you can rely on them' and 'The night staff are good, they come and sit and talk to me because I don't sleep very well.'

We asked people about the staffing levels in the home and how this affected them. Comments included 'There is not always a lot of staff around but someone always comes,' 'There are always plenty of staff about' and 'There is always two staff to help me stand.'

We spoke with people living in the home during our visit. They all told us they were happy living in the home and were satisfied with the care they received. Comments included 'I am very happy here,' 'There is always plenty of staff on duty,' 'The staff are very nice' and 'The food is very good.'

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We last visited the home on 30 July 2011. People we spoke with at that visit had complex needs in relation to memory impairment and whilst they were able to tell us they were happy and well cared for they were not able to recall if they had been involved in their care planning. They told us that they were able to make a choice about their daily care, comments included 'I can go to bed and get up when I choose', 'I get my medicines when I need them', 'They get the GP if needed' and 'There are always choices at meal times'.

People we spoke to at this visit told us 'I can't remember if I signed a care plan but it's fantastic here and I get help with anything I want', 'I get my tablets on time for my pain' and 'They put my cream on everyday'.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with had complex needs in relation to memory impairment and whilst they were able to tell us they were happy and well cared for they were not able to recall if they had been involved in their care planning. They told us that they were able to make a choice about their daily care, comments included 'I can go to bed and get up when I choose', 'I get my medicines when I need them' and 'they get the GP if needed'.

All those we spoke with confirmed they enjoyed the meals provided. One person told us 'the food is very good; you can have bacon and eggs for breakfast if you want'.

Visitors were also very satisfied with the care provided in the home. One visitor stated the communication from staff and the manager was very good and staff were 'very, very caring'. They also told us that their relatives general health and wellbeing had improved since admission.

Health professionals visiting the home told us that the service had worked well with them to implement techniques to manage one persons challenging behaviour.
