During a routine inspection

We spoke with three of the eight people using the service, two members of staff and the manager. We observed support given to people using the service during our inspection. The three people spoken with told us they were happy and liked living at the home. One person told us, 'I'm happy here, I don't have any troubles', and another person told us, 'Yes, I am happy'. One person told us they thought the food was 'lovely, beautiful'. People appeared happy and contented. Care and support were observed to be respectful and responsive to individuals' needs.

Staff ensured people were enabled to make choices and give their consent to care and support whenever possible. Where people did not have capacity to consent, effective systems ensured their rights and well-being were protected in line with legal requirements.

People living at the service and staff knew and got on well with each other. We reviewed care plans for three of the eight people at the service and found they were detailed, up-to-date and person-centred.

The service's effective systems meant medicines were ordered, stored, administered and disposed of correctly. People were protected against the risks associated with inappropriate management of medicines.

The provider's recruitment and selection processes ensured staff employed were suitable and sufficiently skilled to provide effective care and support to vulnerable people. There were sufficient staff working to meet people's fundamental care and welfare needs at all times.

The service was open to suggestions for improvements and responded positively to comments and complaints. People's records were accurate, up-to-date and fit for the purpose of ensuring care and welfare needs were known and met. Effective systems for the handling and storing of records ensured confidentiality and people's privacy were maintained.

During a routine inspection

We made an unannounced visit to Ivydene and looked at the care and welfare of people who used the service. On arrival we were informed that there were currently eight people living at Ivydene and that three of them were out for the day attending day services.

We met with four people who lived at the home during the visit. We were unable to gather their views as some people did not communicate verbally. One person did tell us that the staff were all right and that they were happy living in Ivydene.

We spent time observing how staff interacted and supported people. We saw staff treating people in a sensitive, respectful and professional manner.

We looked around the building which was clean and free from unpleasant odours. The rooms we were shown were personalised with photographs, books, TV's and pictures. There were ceiling hoists in all the bedrooms for people who required assistance with their mobility. A shaft lift had been installed to provide access to the first floor. We saw that there was sufficient space for people using a wheelchair, to move around the ground floor of the home. In the hallway so that people would know who was on duty photographs of the staff working that day were on display.

During a routine inspection

Some of the people who used this service had limited verbal communication and therefore were not able to tell us directly about their experiences of the service.

People told us that they liked to look at the pictures of themselves in their care plans. They showed us that they liked people to sit down and talk with them, about all the things that were in their plan of care.

People told us about some of the activities that they did. Comments included; "I go to the pub'. I drink bitter'I am going to buy a new jumper.. .to the shops"; "I go to the pub and coffee morning".

People indicated to us that they were satisfied with the support that they received from the care staff team. One person requested that a member of staff to help them, which they did; one person asked for a particular member of staff to come and sit with them at dinner time, which they did; one person told us, "The staff are OK'they help me wash and dress".

People told us that they liked their bedrooms. One person told us, "I suppose it (the home ) is run OK".
