During a routine inspection

We met and spoke with seven of the nine people who used the service. The people we spoke with were extremely satisfied with the service and very complimentary about the staff who supported them. They felt the staff understood their needs and could readily make sure they lived a stimulating life. People told us about the holidays they go on; the trips they go on to the cinemas, to the hydrotherapy and into the local community. People felt the home was run like a large family unit.

People told us, “The staff are very good”, “I like the staff and they are really nice” and “The manager is lovely she is really on the ball”.

People also told us about how they were involved in organising the home. We heard that people interviewed potential recruits; chose colour schemes for their rooms and communal areas; and were involved in shaping the menus.

We found that people's care was planned and delivered in line with their needs. The staff were very knowledgeable about people’s care needs and how to meet them. We noted that the staff team had been very stable and most of the staff had been in post for over four years. We found that the manager made sure the home provided effective care and encouraged staff development.

The home was well-maintained and the provider had an on-going programme of redecoration which ensured it was kept to a high standard.

During a routine inspection

Some people were unable to tell us what they thought about the care they received at Longlast. Therefore In order for us to understand their views and experiences we spent time during the inspection observing what people were doing and the interactions between people living at the home and also staff who worked there. The people who could express a view told us that they liked living at the home and thought the care and support they were receiving was very good. One person said “It’s nice here, I’m alright.” Another said “I really like my room; I chose the pictures and the colour”.

We saw that people were well cared for and supported by a team of staff who were very knowledgeable about the care and support that people needed. We saw that people were able to make decisions about how they wanted to spend their time and how they wanted to be supported and cared for.

People had support plans and risk assessments in place which helped staff to understand and meet people's needs and wishes. We observed staff helping people to maintain their independence and make choices for themselves, for example what activities they wanted to participate in during the day and what some people wanted for their lunch.

We saw that contact with families and friend is maintained and staff support people to do this. There was involvement with local community groups and people have the opportunity visit a variety places, attend social events and purse their interests and hobbies.

We spoke with two people who lived at the home. They told us they liked living at Longlast, that they 'love the staff, they look after me well.' and 'Dinner's alright, we get spaghetti bolognaise.' One person told us that they 'don't like it when other people living here shout at me when I'm watching TV but the staff stop it.' and 'I've got my own TV in my room.' People told us about things they like to do, for example,'I like playing with toys', 'I've been doing some knitting, I'm knitting a jumper', 'I like to go shopping' and 'I like playing my organ.'
