During a routine inspection

People told us that staff treated them with kindness and compassion, and described the home's cooking as 'absolutely delicious, it really stands out'. One relative commented, 'The rooms are nice, mum loves the food and there are friendly staff who really seem to care'. Another told us, 'My aunt is very well looked after, I would recommend the home and have done so'.

We spoke with two district nurses who knew the home well. Both told us they had no concerns about the quality of care. One stated, 'There have been huge improvements in the last year and catheter care is much better. Cheri (the manager) seems to have a better handle on things now.' A GP told us, 'Staff are very caring and all my patients seem to love it there'

Staff we spoke with told us they enjoyed their job and felt well supported by the management team. They stated they received good training and opportunities for professional development. One told us, 'This is the best home I've worked in; residents get the chance to go on outings all the time, not just once a year. There's lots of training and I get to learn new things all the time. Staff meetings are regular and we get told of things we need to improve'.

Overall we found that people received a good quality of care; that systems to protect people were robust and that appropriate staff were recruited safely. However some aspects of the environment that people lived in were not safe or well maintained.

We received many positive comments about the quality of the food provided, the cleanliness of the environment and the caring attitude of the home's staff. One person told us, 'We're well fed and well looked after.' Relatives we spoke with told us that staff were good at keeping them informed of what was going on with their family member and if there were any changes to their needs. One relative stated, 'Staff have great patience with my mother who has dementia and constantly repeats herself. They show great compassion for her.' Another reported, 'Mum loves it there and I can't fault the care.'

We spoke with a number of health and social care professionals who knew the home well. None of them had any current concerns about the quality of care provided by staff at the home. They told us there had been huge improvements at the home in the last six months in relation to the recording of people's care needs and staff's understanding of people's more complex needs. One GP told us, 'Staff are very attentive in terms of routine day to day care and they have worked hard to improve how they manage people's more complex medical illnesses.' This was echoed by a visiting nurse who told us, 'Considerable effort has gone into improving things and understanding people's nursing needs. The paperwork for residents is far better now.' Social workers told us that they always received very positive feedback about the home from the people they had placed there.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited the home on 6 February 2013 to check compliance with a warning notice that had been served on the provider and manager in September 2012.

We found that the warning notice had been complied with as the provider and manager had taken proper steps to ensure that each person had an assessment of their needs and a care plan in place so that the staff had they information they required to meet people's needs in a safe manner.

All of the people we talked with were positive about their experience of living at the home. One person told us "they seem pretty good here they help me with a wash in the mornings" another person told us "it's lovely here". All the people we talked with told us that staff were always polite and if they were concerned about anything they could talk to the manager or a member of staff about their concerns and they were confident their concerns would be dealt with appropriately.
