During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this inspection to check whether improvements had been made following our previous inspections. We found that necessary improvements had been made. We spoke with two people, four staff, two managers and the area manager.

We found that best interest decisions were being made on behalf of people who lacked capacity, and these were clearly recorded.

Arrangements were in place to ensure that people were offered a healthier lifestyle. One person said, 'Yes, healthy food.'

People had regular access to other healthcare professionals, in a timely manner and this was monitored to ensure that appointments were chased when they had not been received.

Arrangements were in place to ensure that people were protected from harm.

There were improvements in the way that staff were supported to carry out their role. We found that staff had started to have regular supervision. One staff member said, 'Things are much better here now, and I feel happier.'

People and their relative's comments and complaints were taken seriously. We found that action was taken where necessary to satisfy people.

We found that records were up to date and reviewed regularly. However, improvements needed to be made.

11 September 2012

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people. On the day of the inspection visit there were four people living at the home. We spoke with three people, five staff, and the acting manager.

We found that people were involved in their care decisions throughout the day. We saw that staff respected people and promoted their independence.

We saw positive interactions between people and staff. People's care records were person centred and detailed. We found that people had advice and treatment from other healthcare professionals in a timely manner. This meant that people received care that met their needs.

We found that arrangements were in place to ensure that people were safeguarded from abuse. Improvements were required to ensure arrangements were in place to check that staff were suitable to work with vulnerable adults.

Most staff we spoke with told us that they were not supported to carry out their role. One staff said, 'Nobody listens to us, we are left in the dark.' We found that staff were not regularly supported through supervision and appraisals.

We found that systems to monitor the quality of services were not always effective at identifying shortfalls in the home.
