During an inspection in response to concerns

People using the services said that they liked living in the home. They told us that the staff were friendly and caring. We were able to speak to four of the current residents.

One person told us that everything was fine and they had nothing to complain about. Another person told us they were well looked after.

In a letter of thanks a relative had written, 'mother is happy and well looked after'.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke to people who use the service who told us that they were happy with the care that they received. People said, 'I have lived here for quite a few years and have always been happy with the care' and 'I'm very happy here. The carers are very nice and they help me when I need it.'

We spoke to relatives who told us, 'I've been impressed with the general care. The home has been through some hard times, but things have really been turned around' and 'The home is always nice and clean, it's a very nice place.'

We spoke to staff who said that there was a good atmosphere in the home and that they receive the training and support that they need to do their jobs properly.

19 October 2010

During a routine inspection

Loose Court was registered under the Health & Social Care Act in October 2010 (previously registered under the Care Standards Act) with six conditions of registration. Since the last inspection a new manager had been appointed and had worked hard to make improvements. Following this planned review one of the conditions of registration was lifted and the others were well on their way to being met. People living at the home, relatives and visitors all commented on how much better the home and care was. People told us they were involved in decisions about their care and support and that their privacy and dignity was respected. New care plans had been developed with individuals to inform staff how people wished to be supported although there was some further work to do on these. People told us they were happy with the care and support they received. Menus reflected a varied and balanced diet. People confirmed the food was good and there was always a choice. One said 'I like my meals in my room, it's pretty good food and there is a choice'. People had access to health care such as dentists, doctors and district nurse. People told us they felt safe living at Loose Court. Overall the home was clean and tidy and people said this was always the case. All medication was managed by staff and people got their medication when required. Some further tightening of medication systems will ensure people are fully protected by good practices and procedures. The home and equipment was maintained to ensure a safe and homely environment. Some areas of the home were newly refurbished but a few areas were a bit tired and in need of refurbishment/redecoration. A develop plan to improve the environment was in place but importantly the work will enhance the environment for people suffering from dementia. People confirmed that sufficient staff was on duty and staff were kind and caring. One said 'nice girls, friendly and pleasant'. Further training and support had been completed to enhance staffs skills and knowledge although this was another area where more work was required. People told us they had no complaints and felt confident if they had these would be addressed. There remained shortfalls that still needed to be addressed as mentioned above before the other five conditions of registration can be lifted. The timescale for this is 01 January 2011. Because five conditions of registration remain in place no further action is taken at this time.
