During a routine inspection

On 26 September 2012 we carried out an unannounced inspection of a domiciliary care agency Mears Care - Barnsley. Following the inspection we contacted four people who used the service and six relatives. We asked their opinions on the different aspects of the service to help us with this inspection.

People said the care workers were friendly, treated them with respect and helped them maintain their independence. One person said, 'The staff are kind and help me live in my home.'

People said that care workers always asked them what help they wanted and they were flexible and accommodating to their needs. They told us that care workers asked for their consent before carrying out personal care. All four people we spoke with said most of the time they had the same group of care workers and it helped both parties. One person said, 'We have a very good understanding. The care workers who visit me have got to know me and we have a good laugh.' Another person said any new care workers who visited them, always checked with them how they liked to be addressed and what help they wanted.

Two people who used the service and three relatives said that senior care workers and care co-ordinators visited them occasionally to check whether people were in receipt of the agreed care and to check up on the care workers.
