During a routine inspection

Overall people told us staff treated them with respect. One person said 'They treat me very well.' People also said they felt listened to. One person said 'I talk to staff when I'm feeling down. I feel safe. If I didn't I would talk to the staff. I'm happy here. I feel the staff listen to me.'

People were supported to make choices and to develop independent living skills. One person explained how the staff had supporting them to manage their finances independently. Other people told us staff were helping them to develop their independent living skills through coin recognition, cooking and ironing sessions.

During our visits we had the opportunity of watching staff practices as they supported people. We heard staff address people respectfully and explain to people the support they were providing. Staff were friendly and very polite and understood the support and communication needs of people in their care

During a routine inspection

The manager told us that there was a weekly service user meeting for people who are staying at Thornfield Grange. This meeting was for them to air their views and discuss any problems. One person spoken to during the inspection visit said 'we have house meetings to discuss any problems.

During the inspection visit we saw staff talking to people. We observed that the atmosphere in the centre was calm and relaxed. Members of staff were seen talking to people and there was a good rapport between them. One person said to us 'staff are good,' 'this is one of the best places I've lived' and 'they look after me.'

Staff we spoke with described the key worker system. One person told us they had been on holiday with one of their key workers. They said 'I like going out' and that they 'listen if I have any problems.'

Mental Health Act Commissioner reports

Each year, we visit all NHS trusts and independent providers who care for people whose rights are restricted under the Mental Health Act to monitor the care they provide and check that patients' rights are met. Immediate concerns raised by patients on those visits are discussed, if appropriate, with hospital staff.

Our Mental Health Act Commissioners may carry out a number of visits to each provider over a 12-month period, during which they talk to detained patients, staff and managers about how services are provided. In the past, we summarised themes from the visits and published an annual statement followed by the provider's response where applicable. We are looking at different ways to indicate the outcomes of our monitoring in the future.
