During a routine inspection

We found people were supported to make decisions about their care and the service. One person said, 'I go to the house meetings. We talk about holidays we want to go on and activities. We also talk about living together and being nice to each other.'

We found care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. People we spoke with were positive about the care and support they received. They told us the staff were nice and helped them to be independent. One person told us, 'I'm learning how to do ironing.' Another person said,' I like it here because you get free time. I go to my bedroom and watch DVD's.'

We found people had a choice of suitable and nutritious food and people's individual preferences were taken into account. A person told us, 'I have a snack or a drink when I want one. I have supper every night.'

Staff were aware of how important it was to follow the infection control policy and this helped to protect people from the risk of infection.

Throughout our inspection we observed good interactions and found people who used the service were relaxed and happy with staff. People we spoke with described the staff as, 'Nice' and 'OK.'

People we spoke with told us they knew who to speak with if they had any concerns. One person told us they was not happy living at the home and we found that action had been taken to address these concerns and support the person appropriately.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three residents and the parent of another resident. We asked about the general welfare and experience of the home and received positive comments. One person told us they enjoyed living at the home whilst another commented favourably on the types of activities and the quality of the food.

A relative expressed their support for the way in which the home was managed and gave two examples of why they liked the home. We were told of the positive way in which staff conducted themselves whilst providing escort for family events and how their daughter had increased her independence since living at the home.

During an inspection in response to concerns

A number of the people currently using the service have a variety of complex needs and communication difficulties and we were not able to communicate with them, however we observed interactions between them and the staff that support them.

We spoke with two people during the visit who were keen to tells us about their life at the home, how they spent their time and how the staff supported them.

One of the people using the service showed us round the home and grounds. When we looked at their room they told us that they liked to go shopping with the staff and really enjoyed learning new skills such as making hot drinks and ironing clothes.

They showed us lots of photographs of their family and told us about the holidays and outings they enjoyed with them. They told us they liked living at the home and the staff were kind and nice, comments included 'staff encourage me to do things, if I'm feeling a bit bad they are willing to listen to me'.They also described a lot of the varied activities that they enjoyed, and in particular the shopping trips and having their nails painted. We were told by someone else that they enjoyed playing football and they liked their room.

We observed how people were supported throughout the day. Structured activity programmes were in place and people were supported with a range of activities from playing football in the park, shopping, baking bread, laundry, reading, work- books and listening to music.
