6 December 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with the manager, two staff and one external healthcare professional. The staff told us they felt well supported by the manager. We also spoke with two relatives and four people using the service who expressed satisfaction with the service that they or their relatives had received. One person said, ''The staff know exactly what they need to do. There is a lot of empathy between staff and residents requiring nursing care.'

Systems were in place to allow people choice, involvement and independence. People's individual needs had been met; risks identified and care put in place to support their needs. Documentation showed people's consent had been obtained, but we did not see any guidance for staff on consent processes, advanced directives or the Mental Capacity Act (2005).

We saw that the premises were undergoing some refurbishment and there was some evidence of on-going maintenance which had taken place at the home. We noted some areas of maintenance which the provider may like to note which relate to the garden fence and gate and a hole in the female toilet wall in Bay 2. We saw that people were protected from unauthorised access to the premises as measures were in place to secure the premises.

We found that complaints received had been dealt with quickly and relatives and people using the service told us that they felt able to approach staff with any concerns or complaints they had. This showed that the provider had an effective complaints process in place.

16 August 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people using the service, one relative and six staff including the senior sister on the day of the visit.

People told us they liked living at the home, felt safe and had been happy with the care and support received. Some comments from people about their experiences at the home were: 'Staff are pleasant, they respond quickly to the buzzer', "The home is terribly good' and 'Couldn't pick a better lot. Staff do well ' could do with one or more staff' People said they liked the food, had a choice of meals and had enough to drink. The chef said that he reviewed people's dietary preferences by meeting with them and their relatives every six to eight weeks.

People told us their views had been taken into account and should they have any concerns they would talk to a member of staff or the manager. Staff, people using the service and their relatives told us they had been kept informed of changes and developments. They had received this information through attendance at meetings and care reviews.
