14 October 2015

During a routine inspection

This was an announced inspection which took place on 14 October 2015. Holly Lodge provides accommodation with personal care for 23 older people. At the time of this inspection 20 people were living at the home. At our last inspection in October 2013 the provider was compliant with the regulations we assessed.

There was a registered manager at the home. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. Like registered providers, they are ‘registered persons’. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated Regulations about how the service is run.

We received a high level of praise in relation to this home. People and their relatives were positive and enthusiastic about the quality of the care they received. The registered manager and staff were motivated and committed to providing a high standard of care for people.

People felt safe and risks to their safety had been identified. People and their relatives had no concerns about their family member’s day-to-day safety. Staff knew how to support people safely and had training in how to recognise and report abuse.

Staff were recruited in a safe way. We found there were enough trained and experienced staff to support people and meet their needs in a personalised manner. Staff had good access to training, development opportunities and supervisions to enhance their skills in providing people with high quality care.

People had their medicines when they needed them and the arrangements for the management of people’s medicines was safe.

Care was focused on people’s individual needs and wishes and took into account the impact of medical conditions which affected people’s ability to express themselves.

Staff were aware of how to support people’s rights, seek their consent, respect their choices and promote their independence.

People told us they enjoyed the meals and we saw that risks to their dietary intake were known and staff supported them to eat and drink enough. People’s health was supported by access to appropriate healthcare professionals.

People and their relatives were exceptionally positive about the care provided. Our observations confirmed that staff were attentive, caring and showed compassion when supporting people. The staff were committed to a strong person centred culture which put people first. We saw that people had positive relationships with staff and were treated with respect. People and their relatives felt staff went that extra mile to provide compassionate and enabling care.

People knew how to make a complaint and were confident this would be listened to and acted upon.

People described the management of the home as very friendly and approachable. Staff felt supported by the provider who had used their audits and quality monitoring to develop the service and maintain high standards. The registered manager displayed a commitment to developing the staff team to ensure they could meet people’s needs in a proactive and caring manner.

We saw that care plans were person centred, comprehensive and up to date. People's needs were individually assessed identifying their likes and dislikes. Their care and treatment was planned and in line with their individual needs.

Suitable nutritious food and drinks were available to people throughout the day or on request. We saw staff helping people to eat and drink and these interactions were positive.People's dietary and nutritional needs were being met.

We found that medicines were safely stored, handled and administered.Records in regard to administration of medicines were accurate. We saw that staff were appropriately trained in how to administer medicines. This meant that staff received support to ensure they were confident with the management of medicines. 12 March 2013

During a routine inspection

We spent time with and saw how care was provided for the people who lived at Holly Lodge. We spoke with some people who lived at the home, the registered manager, and three members of staff. We also spoke with a visiting relative.

People who used the service were involved in any decisions that needed to be made about their care, and consent from people was obtained before care and treatment was provided.

People's needs had been assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. Staff were aware of each person's needs and knew how to give care and support to meet those needs to ensure people's health and welfare was maintained.

We found that the provider has taken steps to provide care in an environment that was suitably designed and adequately maintained. This made sure that people who used the service, staff and visitors were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

Recruitment procedures made sure that only suitable staff were employed to safeguard people from the risk of harm. People told us that staff were: 'Good here'. One relative told us that staff were: 'The best, excellent, very caring'.

We found that any comments and complaints people made were responded to appropriately to ensure that people were listened to. We saw comments such as: 'This is the best home, I couldn't wish for a better place for my mother'. One person told us: 'It's so nice here'.

30 March 2012

During a routine inspection

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people using the service. We spoke to five people, three relatives, two staff and the manager.

We saw that people were well presented and wore clothes that reflected their own preferences and styles. There was a friendly and pleasant atmosphere in the home. One person said, 'You get first class treatment here.' People and their relatives were complimentary about the home and staff.

We saw that people were able to sit in the main lounge or in a quieter lounge. This meant people had a choice about where they wanted to sit. One person told us, 'I am fortunate I have a wonderful room overlooking the garden.' People were happy with their rooms and the facilities that were available.

People could have small amounts of money held by the home, which was kept safe and

secure.

We saw positive interactions between staff and people using the service. One relative said, 'Staff are excellent, the care they provide is really good.' We saw that staff respected people, understood their needs, and supported people appropriately. This meant that people received personalised care and treatment.

People told us that they knew how to raise any concerns if they had any; however all the

people we spoke to told us that they did not have any concerns. One person told us, 'I have no problems here but I would make sure I tell the manager if I did.'

We saw that there was ongoing work at the home to make some improvements and to extend the home. We saw that the manager and staff ensured that this caused minimal disruption for people using the service.
