All Inspections

26, 27 September and 9 October 2013

During a routine inspection

At the time of our unannounced inspection there were seven people living at Amberwood. We met five of them, although they were not able to discuss their care in depth. We also spoke with one person's relative.

We also examined records, spoke with the manager and five other staff, and observed staff supporting people in communal areas.

People's privacy, dignity and independence were respected. Their views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care. We saw that people were supported to make choices about their care and that staff respected their preferences.

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. We saw that people were involved in a range of activities and had frequent opportunities for outside activities.

People using the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and manage the quality of the service and risks to people's health, safety and welfare.

7 March 2013

During a routine inspection

During this unannounced inspection there were seven people living in Amberwood.

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service. This was because people who lived at Amberwood had complex needs which meant they were unable to verbally tell us about themselves.

We saw the home used a variety of methods to gain individual's consent to care or treatment, and noted best interest decisions had been carried out where people lacked capacity.

We spoke with four members of staff and the manager. We also briefly spoke to a relative. We observed staff supporting people in communal areas at different times of the day.

People's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. A relative we spoke to told us 'the care is excellent'.

The home was suitably designed and well maintained to meet the needs of people who lived at Amberwood.

Throughout the inspection we observed there were enough suitably skilled staff on duty to support people in a relaxed and person centred manner.

People were made aware of the complaints system. This was provided in a format that met their needs.
