During a routine inspection

On the day of the site visit we found it difficult to get informed feedback from people living at Dale Park due to their level of impairment. We did asked three visitors however as well as some of the residents who could give an opinion. We were also able to make general observations of people's well being as further evidence of inclusion. This included observations using a tool called SOFI [Short Observational Framework for Inspection] that focuses attention on staff interactions, feelings of well being for residents and also their level of engagement or involvement with their surroundings.

All confirmed that their views were being taken into account by staff in the decision making for the care and treatment they received at the home. Visitors told us that staff are very good at keeping them informed about their loved ones condition and this was regularly discussed. Those who gave an opinion said that they were supported to be as active as possible. One person said: 'Staff are always available and they are very good'.

We observed staff interacting and supporting people to the toilet, during meal times and also general socialising. All interactions were supportive and helpful and treated people with respect.

We saw that staff included people in the care given and were careful to explain what they were doing so that residents could be given the opportunity to agree or to choose. One relative said that staff conferred with them about a recent referral to the GP as a visit was needed.

We saw staff attending to people supported in reclining chairs and assisting people to feed. We saw there was good communication and staff were very competent when carrying out care and using any equipment. We spoke with a visitor who said that they are always kept informed about any changes in the care. This shows that the home is responsive to peoples care needs.

People spoken with were relaxed around staff and said that they were listened to so that any concerns could be addressed. Residents, when asked, said that they felt 'safe'. Relatives spoken with were also positive.
