During an inspection looking at part of the service

Everyone we spoke to during this visit was happy with the care they were receiving at the home. Several people said the food had much improved and everyone we asked about their lunch on the day we visited said they had enjoyed their meal. One person said their lunch was "beautiful and nicely served". No one complained about the food or raised any concerns about the quality of their care. One person told us "I have no complaints at all". People were also complimentary about the staff. They said they did not have to wait if they needed support and they thought the staff had the right skills to meet their needs. One person said "the girls are very good - they're very good staff". Another said the staff were lovely and looked after him well.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People using the service told us that they were happy living at the home and they felt safe. People said they liked the staff but felt that there were often not enough staff working on the first floor to meet their needs. People gave us mixed feedback about the food. Some people said the food was all right but some said that they did not like the food. People told us that they were not generally asked for their views about the service by the provider.

During a routine inspection

People told us that they did receive the care and support they needed, that they were involved in making decisions about their care and treatment and that overall, their privacy, dignity and independence were respected.

Overall, people told us that they were not satisfied with the food they were served. One person said that, 'the food is atrocious', and added, 'what is put on the menu is not what you get'. This person concluded that they had complained about food but had not noticed improvements. People also talked about the difficulties in obtaining drinks outside of mealtimes.

People expressed satisfaction with the way they were supported to take their medication and felt that they got their medicines at a time when they needed them.

People said that the home was fresh and clean and that overall, they were satisfied with the premises. The only concern people expressed was that the home was too cold in winter.

People who use the service talked about problems with the service, including management and staffing difficulties over the previous six months, and the impact that this had on the care people received. People were also concerned that nobody had asked them about their experience of the service prior to the appointment of the new manager. One person said that it was, 'chaotic', when the new manager was not at the home but this person was pleased that the new manager was, 'firm with staff who were getting very sloppy'.

Without exception, people told us that they liked the new manager and that they trusted her. One person talked about the 'wonderful, calming effect' that the new manager had on the service.
