During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with four people who use the service. They told us they had not been assessed prior to admission. Two people told us they did not know what they were committing to or what the programme entailed prior to admission. They said they were happy with their care. Two people commented staff were not consistent in the way they were cared for and this gave them mixed messages. They told us they had access to medical and psychological support.

People told us they felt safe. They said that concerns raised with the manager were being addressed. One person told us they knew they could not leave the unit. This meant that their liberties could be deprived as their movements should not be restricted.

They said staff supported them with their medication. One person commented "they get their morning and night time medication on time but the doses throughout the day were not always on time".

People commented sometimes they didn't feel there were enough staff and staff were not always available. Staff felt the staffing levels were generally sufficient. We saw an entry in one person's file which stated it was difficult to enforce strict bed rest due to staff shortages. This did not promote the persons health and well being.

They told us staff were dedicated. One person described staff as 'amazing'. They said agency staff were not very knowledgeable. One person told us agency staff asked inappropriate questions such as did they enjoy their breakfast.

During a routine inspection

People told us that staff treated them well. One person commented that 'staff respects individuality and differences'. They confirmed that when being observed during personal care staff did this in a discreet and respectful way. They told us that they were involved in their plan of care and that they were able to discuss and negotiate changes to it.

People told us they were happy with their care even though they struggled with being treated and cared for. They confirmed that staff gave them their medications and they could have extra medication when required if they felt they needed it.

People told us staff were always available to them if they needed someone to talk to. They felt the staffing levels were sufficient. They told us that they thought staff had a good understanding of eating disorders and they were empathetic to them.

People confirmed that they felt safe and knew who to talk to if they had any concerns or complaints. They felt they were listened to and their views considered.
