During a routine inspection

Most people we spoke with told us their consent to care was always obtained before support commenced and if any changes were made to the support people received from the agency. This made sure that people agreed to the care that they received. People made comments such as, 'I am quite happy with the service' and, 'Overall, they (staff) are very good with my dad.'

We saw from people's care plans that people were supported to live as independently as possible. The agency had carried out an assessment of the needs of each person, and kept this under review, to enable appropriate care and support to be given.

The service had in place policies and procedures covering safeguarding and the protection of vulnerable adults. Staff were familiar with safeguarding and whistle blowing procedures and knew what to do in the event of abuse being suspected.

We reviewed the level of staffing for the agency. Most people we spoke with confirmed that there was enough staff to support them with their care needs. However, some people told us that they had experienced missed calls, which had an overall impact on how people were being cared for. People told us this had now improved. We have also written to the provider reminding them of their obligation to report to us any incidents that may impact on the delivery of the service to people.

The organisation had systems in place to make sure people were safely cared for. This included policies and procedures and quality monitoring systems.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with nine people in total by telephone, eight who receive support from the agency and one relative. People told us that they were happy and satisfied with the care and support being provided. Comments made to us during this review included, 'Our carer is very, very good. I would say that she is first class and give her 100% if I was scoring her. She is excellent' and '(person's name) is lovely and helpful. I would recommend SAGA to anyone.' People also said 'The staff are very, very helpful, lovely and pleasant' and 'My carer is beautiful. I cannot impress how good she really is and how much she helps me.' One relative told us 'SAGA are pretty good. Carers are very consistent and very polite and on the whole are very good.'

People told us that they hold copies of their care plans and confirmed that they were always involved in any care planning with the agency. People also told us that they are asked by the agency as they carry out regular surveys to ensure that they are always satisfied with the service they receive from SAGA.

We spoke with two members of staff during our visit to the agency's offices. They told us that they were well supported and were provided with the information and training they needed to do their jobs. Staff we spoke with told us the training at the agency was 'excellent'

We spoke with the Local Authority Contracts Officer who informed us that they did not have any concerns about this service.
