During a routine inspection

We spoke with 12 people who used the service and some of their families and with seven care staff. People who used the service we spoke with told us they were happy with the service they received. People told us that the staff were respectful and were on time in attending their home. People said that information was provided to help them to make an informed decision about their treatment.

People told us they were always treated in a respectful manner, and the staff knew them well and understood how to attend to their needs. Everyone we spoke with said that the staff explained what they were doing and involved them in decisions about their care, and in reviewing their care plans. One person said: 'the staff are excellent and are like family the way they treat me.' Another person said: 'the agency staff are always the same ones and know me well, I couldn't ask for better.' These comments were reflective of the comments we received from the majority of people we spoke with. People said they felt safe and well cared for.

The provider communicated with other care professionals such as GPs, district nurses and occupational therapists when necessary to ensure people were safely supported, and one person we spoke with said that the provider was good at checking they were properly supported, by checking equipment and training staff. The provider ensured that the staff were trained and supervised so that they were up to date in their practice and supported people safely.

There was a system in place to effectively check that a good quality of care was provided. A number of people we spoke with who used the service said that the staff were monitored by supervisors from the agency, who regularly visited them to observe their work practices.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with told us they were happy with the service and the carers were very good. They said they felt that their care plans reflected their needs. We found that people's risk assessments and care plans had been updated since our last visit on 08 and 09 January 2013 and reflected people's needs.

8, 9 January 2013

During a routine inspection

People using the service and their relatives we spoke with told us the care workers visiting people's homes were pleasant, reliable, trustworthy, and that they did their work well. One person who had recently started using the service said; 'I didn't really know what to expect, but a nice lady visited me and explained how the service could help me. I thought I could manage, but I wasn't really eating properly.' Another person said; 'The carers are very pleasant. Nice, ordinary people. The kind I get on with.' People and relatives knew how to contact the office if there were any problems and said they felt comfortable and safe with the service. They said staff made a written record of the care they provided at the end of every visit. People who gave care workers money for shopping said their money was looked after properly because they were given receipts and the correct change, and written records were kept.

We found people using the service were involved in decisions about their treatment and care and were treated with dignity and respect. They were cared for by suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff and were protected from the risk of abuse. We also found records were kept which were fit for purpose and stored securely. However, risk assessments and care plans had not been reviewed for more than 12 months for some people, putting them at risk of receiving care that was inappropriate or unsafe.
