All Inspections

20 August 2013

During a routine inspection

We made a visit to the service and spoke with staff and talked with people who lived in the home. People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care.

During the visit, we carried out a "Short Observational Framework Inspection" (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing people's care to help us to understand the experience of people who are unable to talk with us.

Comments received from people about the service included 'Everything is perfect here'; 'A very big thank you for all the care that you have given X'; 'Thank you so much for looking after X so well on their visit. We would not hesitate sending X into your care again'; 'We would like to say a big thank you for all the care, support and kindness you have given to X and the whole family whilst X was in your care' and 'I wish to express my sincere thanks to everyone at Kiln Court for the help and kindness shown to me during my stay. Everything was absolutely first class'.

We found that clear procedures were in place to obtain valid consent.

The staff supporting the people that used the service knew what support they needed and we saw that the support given to people matched what their care plan said they needed.

Medications were handled appropriately and people who used the service had their medicines given to them in a safe way.

We found that there was a robust recruitment process in place that helped to make sure that only people who were deemed as suitable were employed to care for people that used the service.

We saw that there were monitoring processes in place that ensured that people were protected against the risks of inappropriate or unsafe care and treatment as the service regularly assessed and monitored the quality of the service provided.

During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

The inspection team was led by a CQC inspector, who was joined by an 'Expert by Experience' (people who have experience of using services and who can provide that perspective).

During the visit we carried out a 'Short Observational Framework Inspection' (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing people's care to help us to understand the experience of people who are unable to talk with us.

The registered manager was not available on the day of the inspection, and we gave feedback to the senior team leader.

We spoke with staff and relatives during the visit; and we talked with people living in the home, in communal areas, and in their own rooms.

People's comments included:

'I have been at this home for about three years. It is very nice here and I am free to walk about outside as I wish. I especially enjoy it when people come in and play music for us.'

'They look after us very well. I like being here.'

'This is an excellent home, I cannot fault anything. The staff are brilliant and tender loving care is the order of the day. The food is good too.'

'This is a very good home. The staff are kind and always cheerful."

'I have been here 10 years. It's a great place to live. '

'I am just going home after a two week stay here. I am a little apprehensive as I have loved it here and the staff are so kind.'

A relative said:

'This is a lovely home and my relative is so happy here. The staff are very good with her and I have no worries about her being here. I would report anything untoward but everything I have seen is good.'
