During a routine inspection

We saw people living in the home were treated with dignity and respect and the staff who looked after them were polite and courteous. One person told us 'The staff are approachable and friendly.'

We saw people who used the service had care plans completed which reflected their needs and abilities and considered the individuals personal preferences. Risk assessments were carried out to reduce the risk of harm or injury occurring and these were regularly reviewed in line with care plans.

Staff who worked in the home were happy and felt they were getting the support they needed from colleagues and the manager of the home. Staff were provided with training opportunities to help them carry out their roles effectively.

Checks were carried out by the manager to ensure that people were properly cared for and the environment which they lived in was safe.

Some floors in the home were not clean and dirt had gathered at the edges of floor coverings that had lifted. In addition the walls in one of the lounges had mould growth and was in a state of disrepair.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People said they had been provided with information about the home in the form of a service user guide. We saw copies of the guide to confirm this. The information in the guide included an overview of the service and other services made available to people within the home.

People also said they were involved in their care, with their preferences being sought and taken into consideration. One person told us "I like to have a large, late breakfast. I prefer not to eat after that until tea time." Another person told us they had moved to a room on the first floor recently while their room was being decorated. They said they had asked to stay there permanently as it suited them better and the provider had agreed to this request.

People told us they were happy with the staff at Denehurst Nursing Home and the care they provided. One person said the staff were "Second to none" and another person told us "They (the staff) help you all they can."

People said they knew they could approach the staff at any time if they wanted something. One person said "You just have to ask if you want to go anywhere and they (the staff) will take you." They also said the staff knew them well and how best to help and support them.

We spoke with several people and their relatives during this visit. They made many positive comments about the way they were cared for by staff. One person said 'The staff are very good.' Another person told us 'I can't see very well and the staff always go out of their way to make sure that I know what I'm eating and they get me something else if I don't like it.'

The people who spoke with us were generally happy with the care that was provided at the home. One person told us 'They look after me very well.'

The people who we spoke with had mixed feelings about the amount of activities which were available, one person said 'There aren't many activities on, there isn't much to do.' Whilst another person told us 'Over Christmas and New Year the activities girl was brilliant.'

We also spoke with some relatives who were visiting their family, one relative told us 'My mum likes to spend her time upstairs and sometimes she can be up there for up to an hour by herself without any of the staff coming to check on her.' Another relative said 'I think that the standards are slipping.'

The people that we spoke with were very complimentary about the staff at the home. One person told us 'He's a canny lad' when talking about a member of staff. Another person said 'The staff always put themselves out for you.'
