All Inspections

16 December 2013

During a routine inspection

People living in the home had limited verbal communication and therefore were unable to tell us about their views of the care they received. However, we observed that staff understood how to communicate with people and were able to support people to make choices about their daily living. We spoke with the relative of one person and they told us they were happy with the care being provided and 'they understand '. needs'.

We looked at the care records for the three people living in the home and spoke with staff about those people's needs. We found care plans were informative and personalised to the individual, reflected people's needs and were regularly reviewed.

Care plans recorded people's likes and dislikes, daily routines and how they communicated their wishes. Staff demonstrated a good understanding of people's needs and used this knowledge to enable people to make their own day-to-day decisions about their care.

Appropriate arrangements were in place in relation to the recording and storage of medicine. Staff were appropriately trained, supervised and appraised. The provider sought the views of people who used the service and used these comments to improve and develop the service.

During a routine inspection

We were unable to ask people about their views of living in the home because of their complex communication needs. However, we observed that staff understood peoples' communication needs and were able to support people to make choices about their daily living. One person was taken out for a drive during our visit when they requested it. We spoke with a GP and a speech therapist who visited the home on the day of the inspection. They both told us they trusted and respected the knowledge staff had about people living in the home and were confident that staff contacted them appropriately.

Care plans were personalised to each individual's needs and detailed how staff should work with people to meet those needs. Risk assessments had been completed where necessary and all care records were reviewed monthly.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. Care was provided in an environment that was safe, well maintained and met people's needs.

During a routine inspection

We were unable to communicate with the people using the service due to their complex communication needs.

We were able to observe that people were supported to do what they wanted and were taken out during our visit.

We also spoke with a relative who told us the person "seems happy there" (in the home). They also told us that they feel the person is safe in the home and that all their healthcare needs are met and sufficient activites are provided. The relative told us the staff were " very good" and that they had ensured that suitable adaptations were provided in the home.
