During a routine inspection

During this inspection we set out to answer our five key questions; is the service safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led?

Is the service safe?

We observed that people, who were at risk of developing a pressure sore, were seated on pressure relieving cushions and had air flow mattresses on their beds. The mattresses were set at the appropriate setting in accordance with the person's weight recorded in their care plans.

We spoke with two of the staff members. They confirmed that they had had a formal interview for their role and that they had been unable to start work at the service until criminal record checks and references had been received by the manager. This ensured that people were protected through robust recruitment procedures.

Is the service effective?

We looked at the care plans for three people who used the service and saw that these had been reviewed regularly. The staff members we spoke with during our inspection were aware of the needs of the people they cared for.

Is the service caring?

We spoke with three relatives of people who used the service. One relative told us, 'The nurses here are fantastic, the staff are really very good. I think the service is improving, yes, definitely improving. The manager is very responsive to both us and the residents, he listens.'

Is the service responsive?

We saw that people's call bells were answered in a timely manner and urgent assistance calls were answered immediately. There were staff members available throughout the duration of our inspection to identify and meet people's needs.

Is the service well led?

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare.
