During a routine inspection

Huddleston Way provides support and care to people with a learning disability. On the day we visited only two of the 15 people receiving a service required support and care within the scope of the regulated activities. During the visit we spoke with five people who used the service, including the two people who received care as well as support. We reviewed two care/support plans, spoke with three staff and the registered manager.

We found that people's support plans were clear, person centred and provided the reader with a picture of the person receiving the support. People we spoke with understood their plan and had signed to say they were in agreement with its contents.

We looked at medication management and there were systems in place that meant medication was managed safely. Staff were trained to administer medication if required. When we visited the service none of the people receiving the service needed staff to administer their medication, but some did require prompting and observation.

Staff were experienced and had received training to ensure they had the qualifications, knowledge and experience to carry out their roles. One person told us the staff were "...marvellous." Another said "I'm happy with my support."

There was a process in place to ensure the quality of the service was maintained. People's views were sought, support plans were reviewed and training and supervision of staff took place on a planned basis.

30 October 2012

During a routine inspection

During our visit on 30 October 2012 we spoke with two people using the service. People we spoke with told us that they felt well supported and said that staff were helpful and there was always some one to talk to.

One person told us 'I have a key worker who helps me with my meals and shopping.' Another person said 'The staff are very nice. I get a lot of help with my mail, my bills and my money.' We were told that staff helped them with cooking and they could choose the meals they liked to cook. Both people we spoke with said that everything was always explained to them and they always knew what was planned.

We were told that if people had any worries or concerns they would either talk to their key worker or 'Staff in the office.'

People told us that staff helped them learn new skills so they could become independent. One person told us they would like to move into their own home in the future.
