During a routine inspection

We spoke to different people about the service. We did this to gain a balanced overview of what people experienced, what they thought and how they were cared for and supported. We spoke to two service users, three support workers, a senior support worker and the Manager.

We asked people whether they gave consent to their care, treatment and support they received and what happened if they refused. People said they could agree or refuse and could change their mind if they wanted to. We asked staff what they would do if a service user refused something that was planned for them and they told us that they discussed it with the person and tried to persuade them but could not force someone to do anything if they did not consent. We asked people if they knew how to make a complaint if they were unhappy with anything, and they did.

People said that they received the care they needed and we saw that it matched their care plans. We observed staff interact with and care for people in a kind and professional way. Staff acted as if they knew the different needs and plans for all of the service users.

People told us that there were always enough staff to look after them but that outings were sometimes cancelled if there were not enough staff. We looked at staffing records for the last four months and found that between there were always a minimum of four staff on duty during the day and two at night.

We asked people if the home was clean and they said it was. However, we observed general cleanliness and infection control and there were some areas of concern.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who used the service when we visited. They said they were well looked after and treated with dignity and respect. They told us:

'The support we get is very good', 'It's marvellous here, just like home',

We observed staff treated people well and recognised and understood their behaviour and needs.

Evidence demonstrated that people who used the service were involved in how they were cared for. Support plans identified people's needs and how their needs were to be met. Risk assessments were seen to be individualised and formal risk assessments were used, these included for example health and safety, kitchen use, road safety, agitation /self harm. Management plans were in place detailing what staff needed to do to prevent or minimise the risk. Risk assessments and support plan records were accurate and reviewed regularly.

The provider had systems in place to monitor the quality of service and to gain people's views on the service and how improvements could be made.

During a routine inspection

One person we spoke with told us that they regarded the staff more as friends than staff. We were told that there is mutual respect between the staff and residents. We were told that staff always support them in being as independent as possible. One resident told us that the staff always supported them to go to the places they liked. We were told that staff treated everyone well.

We saw comments made by a social worker complimenting the staff at the home for their hard work and in particular in supporting and preparing someone to move on from the home to greater independence.

People living in the home told us that they felt safe.

People told us that they get their medicine when they need it.

One person told us that they felt settled and secure living in the home and it was a great place to live.
