During a routine inspection

On this inspection we spent our time in the main house at the service.

People were asked for their consent before care or support was provided and staff acted in accordance with people's wishes.

We observed that the care that people received was safe and appropriate and met their needs. Their comments included, 'It's nice here.' and 'It's a good home. My family visit me. It's right nice here and I love it.' A family member said, 'It's brilliant. [Family members] really happy, which in turn makes me really happy. All the staff are very good. It's like 'home from home'.'

People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. A family member told us they had no complaints about the cleanliness of the home.

Staff were properly trained and supervised and had the chance to develop and improve their skills.

There was a complaints system available and people had their complaints listened and responded to. A family member said, 'I'd have no concerns complaining. Staff are all so friendly. If you have any problems, you just say so and it's dealt with. There's no problems there.'

During a routine inspection

People with learning disabilities are not always able to tell us about their experiences, so we used informal observations during our inspection visit to determine their experiences. We saw staff treated people with dignity and respect by using a positive, friendly and kind approach. People and staff engaged in appropriate conversation, eye contact and touch. We saw that people moved around the home as they wished, and were encouraged by staff to engage in meaningful activity, when people showed an interest in an activity. We saw that staff did knock on people's doors before entering, respecting that, that space was the private space of the person. We found people looked clean, tidy and had their personal care and welfare needs met.

During our inspection visit we spoke with two people who used the service. They liked living at Highfields Farm and the various activities they were involved in. They said staff looked after them well and they liked the staff. They told us they felt safe with staff and said that if they weren't happy they would tell staff and they would 'sort it out'.

We found staff were appointed only after appropriate checks had taken place.

We found the provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive. This included involving people using the service, their families and friends and other professionals in reviewing the performance of the service.
