During a routine inspection

There were seven people using the service. We spoke with four of them and one relative to find out their opinions of the service. Their comments included, "I like it here" and "They are helping (my relative) get back into the community."

We found that where people did not have capacity to make decisions in their own interests, the provider acted in accordance with legal requirements. Staff supported people to make decisions about their day to day lives as far as they were able.

We found that people's care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan. Appropriate arrangements were in place to manage medicines.

We spoke with a number of health and social care professionals to find out their opinion of the service. We concluded, from their opinions, that people's health, safety and welfare was protected because the provider worked in co-operation with others.

People were given support by the provider to make a comment or complaint where they needed assistance.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We last visited this service on 2 and 8 February 2012 where we had concerns that people's privacy was not always being respected; that risk assessments were not being reviewed and updated enough; that the premises were not as clean and well maintained as they should have been; and that staff were not always getting sufficient support from management by way of regular one to one meetings.

This report is about our visit to the service on 6 June 2012, which we carried out to check that action had been taken to address the concerns described above. We spoke with three of the five people staying there. We also spoke with four care workers and the registered manager.

We saw that the people who lived there had good relationships with the registered manager and care workers. People told us that their privacy was respected and the care workers provided good support to them. We saw that people had been supported to participate in social activities in the community. One person told us that they found living there 'totally boring', however we saw that they had been given support and opportunities to develop their independent living skills and widen their social interests, but this support had often been refused.
