During a routine inspection

We found people using services at Valleyfield being offered choices at regular intervals during the day. We observed staff members asking "do you want to get a shower now" and "do you feel like some breakfast yet". People`s privacy and dignity were respected at all times. Care plans and risk assessments were well structured and up to date and reviewed every 3-6 months and, if necessary, changed to meet people`s needs.

It was not possible for people using services to share their experience of living at Valleyfield with us but we did talk to two relatives who were visiting. They could not have been more complimentary of the care and treatment offered and delivered at Valleyfield saying "everything is brilliant here including the staff". People using services were protected from the risk of abuse because the provider had procedures in place to identify the possibility of suspected or actual abuse. We spoke with two staff members who commented they received a thorough induction and also ongoing training and professional development which provided them with the skills to care for people using services. Observations made during our visit confirmed care was delivered in a professional and dignified manner which showed total respect for people using services. An effective system was in place to respond to and monitor any comments or complaints including escalation to senior managers if the complaint could not be concluded in a satisfactory manner at a local level.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people living at Valleyfield. This was because all of the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We observed during our inspection that the people living at Valleyfield appeared happy and content living there. We found people were treated respectfully and given support to have their say in how they wanted to be helped and were supported to do the things they wanted to do.

The people living at Valleyfield had limited verbal communication but could communicate in a number of other ways. They were supported by their families and people who knew how to communicate with them when decisions needed to be made about their care and welfare. They were represented in their best interests when it was appropriate to do so.

The people who lived at Valleyfield were cared for by staff who were appropriately recruited, trained and experienced at supporting them.

During a routine inspection

Due to the different ways that the people living at Valleyfield communicate we were not able to directly ask them their views on the support they received.

However, during our visit we met with all of the people living there. We spent time observing the support they received from staff with their everyday lives and how they chose to spend their time at home. We have taken this information into account in writing this report.
