During a routine inspection

We observed staff treating people with respect, being polite and courteous. People who used the service and their families had contributed their opinions and preferences in relation to how care was delivered. One relative told us, 'Staff always ask (name of person) how she needs to be looked after.'

People's needs were assessed and care and support was planned and delivered in line with their individual care needs. The care plans contained a good level of information setting out exactly how each person should be supported to ensure that their needs were met. One person told us, 'Things are fine', 'I like living here' and 'Staff help me.'

People who used the service, staff and visitors were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises. The design and layout of the premises was suitable for carrying out the regulated activity.

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff. Appropriate checks had been undertaken before staff began work. This included carrying out a Criminal Records Bureau check and obtaining references from previous employers.

There were quality monitoring programmes in place, which included people giving feedback about their care, support and treatment. This provided a good overview of the quality of the service's provided.

During a routine inspection

Some people were not able to verbally tell us their experiences. We therefore used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service, including talking to people, looking at records and observing the care being delivered.

We could communicate verbally with some people who used the service to find out their views and experiences. Two people we spoke with told us they were happy living at the home and they were well looked after. One person told us, 'I like it here and staff are nice' and 'I am looking forward to going on holiday soon.' Another person told us, 'Its nice living here, I am happy.'

We saw evidence of choices and decisions made by people who used the service recorded in their care plans.

We saw that people who used the service were comfortable with staff and had good interaction with them. It was clear that staff knew the people they were supporting very well. Staff showed a good understanding of people's communication needs.

We found people received care and treatment in a clean environment with various infection control measures in place to minimise the risk of infection. One person told us, 'I help out keeping the house clean. I make my bed and wash the cars.'

During a routine inspection

During the visit we spoke to people using the service and they told us they were happy with all aspects of service. Comments included:

'Like living here.'

'Like the staff.'

'Like the things we do.'

'Like my room.'

In view of the communication needs of the people who use the service, we also relied on observations between the staff and people who use the service.

We spoke with staff during our visit. Staff were very positive about working in the home and praised the teamwork and supportive atmosphere.
