During a routine inspection

We found that the provider had procedures for providing information to people and obtaining their consent prior to treatment. There were relevant policies and procedures in place to support staff in relation to consent. People we spoke with told us that the issue of consent was discussed with them as had the treatment options available to them. We also found that people were given information in writing about their treatment options and people told us that they had been given time to consider their decisions.

We saw evidence that the provider had made individual assessments of need and had discussed treatment options and risks with people who used the service. The provider was able to show that appropriate contingency plans and procedures were in place for emergency situations.

We saw that the provider had systems in place to ensure that appropriate standards of cleanliness were maintained. The provider also had appropriate infection control procedures in place.

We saw that there were appropriate recruitment procedures in place and that the employees were suitably qualified, skilled and experienced for the purposes of carrying on the regulated activity

The people who use the service told us that the staff were very understanding and patient and provided information that enabled them to make their own informed choices and decisions. The individual counselling sessions were held in quiet enclosed rooms ensuring privacy. One person said that I feel safe here and I am confident with my choice.

Another said they answered all my questions and there was always enough time to discuss the choices.

The members of staff that we spoke to were knowledgeable and skilled in the delivery of the service.Training records and discussions with staff confirmed that staff received regular training in their areas of competency.

One member of staff told us that there are always adequate numbers of staff here to provide the service.

The unit was clean and well furnished, appeared well maintained and there were adequate staff on site.

During a themed inspection looking at Termination of Pregnancy Services

We did not speak to people who used this service as part of this review. We looked at a random sample of medical records. This was to check that current practice ensured that no treatment for the termination of pregnancy was commenced unless two certificated opinions from doctors had been obtained.

People who use the service said they were treated with dignity, respect and were involved in choosing the type of care and support they needed and when they required it. This was supported by an information pack that was explained to them. They were encouraged to take the pack away and use the information to support them to make choices of course of action they wished to follow.

They said they received quality care and support from friendly and competent staff and they felt safe receiving the service. These comments were supported by the questionnaires we saw that people who use the service returned to it. They told us that they were in personal contact with the staff and manager frequently to identify that they were satisfied with the service and staff delivering it.
