During a routine inspection

The home cares for and supports people with a wide range of complex needs. People who used the service had limited communication. We were unable to find out their views and experiences through discussion. We observed care given by care staff. We saw that people smiled and appeared relaxed and comfortable with staff and others living in the home. During our inspection we saw that people received good care.

The provider and staff were aware of their responsibilities regarding the management of medication. Staff had recieved training for the management of medications. There was a system for managing and documenting medication including the use of creams. There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs.

People who used the service appeared happy with the care and support they received. This was because people were treated with respect and supported in meeting their care needs, whilst maintaining their independence.

The provider had systems in place to assess and monitor the standards at the home and action plans showed they address items that came to their attention

During a routine inspection

The service cares for and supports people with a wide range of complex needs. People who used the service were not able to verbally tell us their experiences. We therefore used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service, including observing the care being delivered, talking with staff and looking at records in the home.

The home had a lively atmosphere with people positively and actively engaged in meaningful activities. We noted that people demonstrated positive behaviours of smiling and communicating freely with staff.

During a routine inspection

We could communicate verbally with some people who use the service to find out their views and experiences. They said they were happy at the home smiled, nodded and answered 'yes' when we asked if they liked the home and the staff who supported them. We saw that people who use the service were comfortable with staff and had good interaction with them. It was clear that staff knew the people they were supporting very well. Staff showed a good understanding of people's communication needs whether that was through signs or gestures.

We saw that care practices were good. Staff were kind and supportive to people, they treated people as individuals. Staff gave good examples of how people are treated with dignity and respect. They said it was important to give people as much choice in their life as possible, to be discreet when giving support and to encourage people to be mindful of their own privacy.

We saw from records that people enjoy a wide range of activity and are supported to have an active social life and keep in touch with family and friends. Staff said they like to make sure people who use the service get out at some point each day.

Staff said they had a good team who worked well together. They said the home was well managed and the manager worked alongside them. They said the manager was supportive.
