During a routine inspection

The home cares for and supports people with a wide range of complex needs. People who used the service had limited communication. We were unable to find out their views and experiences through discussion. We observed care given by care staff. We saw that people smiled and appeared relaxed and comfortable with staff and others living in the home. During our inspection we saw that people received good care.

People who used the service appeared happy with the care and support they received. This was because people were treated with respect and supported in meeting their care needs, whilst maintaining their independence.

The provider and staff were aware of their responsibilities regarding protecting people from abuse. Staff told us they knew how to raise concerns. There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs.

Effective quality auditing procedures were undertaken and appropriate systems were in place for gathering, recording and evaluating information about the quality of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

People using the service cannot communicate verbally so we observed staff providing care and support and we spoke with staff about the people using the service. This gave us assurances that staff knew the needs of people and knew how to deliver the care and support effectively. We saw there was a calm, relaxed atmosphere in the home

Care staff supported people in a sensitive way using differing methods of communication to ensure that people understood what was going to happen. People were supported to experience a range of activities and to undertake some day to day tasks. People appeared well cared for having their personal care needs met in an environment that supported them.

We saw the complaints procedure was available to people who used and visited the service. The service had systems in place to manage and audit medication. We found that the service had records in place to record staff training and supervision.

During a routine inspection

In view of the communication needs of the people who use the service, we relied on observations between the staff and people who use the service to assess the views of people who use the service. We observed staff offering people choices about how and where they wanted to spend their time, and what food and drinks they wanted.

We spoke with staff during our visit. Staff were very positive about working in the home and praised the teamwork and supportive atmosphere.
