All Inspections

5 August 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people living at the home. Most people were not able to tell us directly what they thought about the service. However, during our visit we spent time observing how care staff supported people and this was positive and respectful.

The environment had been specially adapted by the use of colour coded doors and memory boxes on doors to help people find their way around and to feel comfortable in their surroundings. We were told that the service was further developing the environment to be more dementia friendly. The general environment d'cor was looking shabby and in need of attention but we were told this being addressed as part of the forthcoming refurbishment programme.

There were sufficient staff on duty to support people for their care needs and staff had access to appropriate training and supervision to undertake their roles.

We saw the provider had a quality monitoring process in place to check the quality of the service, which included seeking the views of people and their relatives.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with eight people living at the home. Some people were not able to tell us directly what they thought about the service. However, during our visit we spent time observing how care staff supported people and this was positive and respectful.

The environment had been specially adapted by the use of colour coded doors and memory boxes on doors to help people find their way around and to feel comfortable in their surroundings. Staff told us they had also received training in supporting people with dementia.

People were positive in their views about the home. They told us;

'It's lovely here, all the girls are great', 'She never passes by without asking if I want or need anything', 'I'm very grateful'.

We had lunch in one of the dining rooms and saw staff spend time with people and they supported them with dignity and respect. People were assisted to make clear choices at lunch by staff showing them the options for the main meal already plated on small serving plates. There were sufficient staff on duty to support people for their care needs.

We spoke with one visitor to the home who was positive in their comments and about the care their relative received. They told us; 'The girls are always jolly'.

We saw the provider had a quality monitoring process in place to check the quality of the service, which included seeking the views of people and their relatives.
