All Inspections

18 November 2013

During a routine inspection

During the inspection we spoke with all the people who used the service, two care workers, a manager and the registered manager. People who used the service told us that they received the care and support that they needed. People approached staff without hesitation and staff interacted with people in a sensitive and positive manner.

Each person who used the service had a plan of care that had been regularly reviewed and included information about the individual support and care that the person needed. People were asked for their consent about matters to do with their care and treatment.

People's health, safety and welfare were protected as they received the advice and treatment that they needed from a range of healthcare and social care professionals.

The home was warm, well lit and generally clean. People accessed their bedrooms and the communal areas of the home freely.

There were not suitable arrangements in place for the storage of some medication.

Staff received appropriate training and support to carry out their roles and responsibilities in meeting the needs of the people. People knew how to make a complaint and were confident that the home would respond appropriately to any concerns that they had. Comments from people included "I am happy here," and "I can talk to my keyworker if I have a worry."

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out an unannounced inspection to check if the provider had complied with a compliance action that we had made at the time of our previous inspection that took place on the 5th February 2013. During that inspection we had found that there was not sufficient written evidence that told us people's care plan records had been reviewed regularly and/or updated in response to their changing needs. These records included people's care plans, risk assessments and behaviour management guidance. We also found that a fire risk assessment had not been reviewed for several years.

During this follow up inspection we spoke to four people who used the service, two staff and the manager. We also checked records to make a judgement as to whether the provider had met the compliance action Outcome 21 Records, Regulation 20 (HSCA 2008 Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010.

At this inspection we found that the provider had taken proper steps to ensure that up to date records were in place to protect people who used the service from the risks of unsafe or inappropriate care and treatment.

5 February 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke to the four people using the service. People told us that they felt safe and received the care they needed and wanted. People were positive about the staff that supported them. People were supported and encouraged to make decisions about their lives. During the inspection people decided what they wanted to eat, and what they wanted to do.

People's health, safety and welfare were protected as they received the advice and treatment that they needed from a range of health and social care professionals. Staff knew about their roles and responsibilities in meeting the needs of people who use the service and they supported people in a friendly and respectful manner. People's independence and skills were promoted and supported by staff. We saw that people using the service were involved in carrying out some household tasks.

Each person had a plan of care that included information about the individual support and care that they needed. However, it was not evident that care plans, guidance and risk assessments had been recently reviewed or were up to date.

1 February 2012

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Dana House on the 1st February 2012 we spent time talking to people using the service to gain their views about what it was like living in the home.

People told us they were happy and they informed us that they liked their bedrooms, and enjoyed the meals. They told us they made choices about their lives, which included making decisions about when they went to bed, when they got up, and what they wanted to wear. People confirmed they had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities of their choice and they told us they received the care and support that they wanted and needed.

People told us that staff listened to them, were approachable and asked them for feedback about the quality of the service that was provided by the home. During our visit people showed signs of 'well being'. They were seen to smile and laugh, move freely in the home and were well dressed. We saw people talking with each other and approaching and conversing with staff in a relaxed manner and without hesitation.

We were told by the manager that there were systems in place to monitor, develop and improve the quality of the service.

Staff spoke of having received appropriate training to ensure that they were competent in carrying out their role and responsibilities. They told us they enjoyed their job supporting and caring for people at Dana House. Staff confirmed that there was good communication between staff and excellent teamwork. They told us that the manager was approachable and very supportive.
