During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit there were 23 people residing at the service.

Care records were detailed and were reviewed regularly to ensure care records accurately reflected people's current needs. People told us they were satisfied with their care. One person said 'The staff here are smashing. I wouldn't go anywhere else'.

All staff had a good awareness of the dietary requirements of people who used the service. Routines had been developed to afford people with higher support needs dedicated support when being assisted to eat and drink.

Although the home was generally clean and staff were aware of infection control practices we did raise some issues on the day of our visit regarding the storage of hoist slings and the cleanliness of bath and shower seats. These were rectified before the end of our visit. The provider also sent us confirmation on the day following our visit that cleaning schedules had been amended to ensure standards were maintained following our visit.

Recruitment processes ensured people were protected from the risks of being supported by unsuitable staff.

The manager worked in accordance with the provider's quality assurance policy to ensure they monitored the quality of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people that used the service, two relatives, one staff and the manager about all aspects of the service at Holyrood House. We also looked at systems for handling medication and complaints and we looked at documentation in relation to peoples' care and staff training.

We found that people and relatives were generally satisfied with the service of care provided and that people liked living at Holyrood House. They said, "It's lovely here", "The staff are very helpful", "I would tell the manager if I was unhappy about anything" and "We can choose what we want to do and when".

We found that people gave their consent to the care and support they received and that their needs were met. We found there was a safe system for handling and administering medication and that people received their medication as prescribed and when they needed it. We saw that the care and ancillary staff had been trained to carry out their roles and that they received appropriate regular supervision.

We found that the environment was old and tired in respect of the decoration and that not everyone had their needs for regulating their body temperature adequately met.

We found that there was an appropriate complaint procedure which had been used to complainants' satisfaction.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people in the home. They told us they felt very included. They said they made choices and decisions for themselves whenever possible and that they enjoyed a lot of freedom.

They told us the staff were pleasant and helpful and, where possible, encouraged them to maintain their independence. They told us they thought the food was good, that they had plenty of choice and they could be as independent as possible with their finances and medication.

People told us they had no worries about the way they had been treated.
