During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out this inspection because we received information referring to staff not be recruited by the provider correctly. This meant we needed to check AMG Nursing and Care Services were recruiting staff as required, to ensure people using the service were suitably protected.

The inspection was unannounced which meant the provider and the staff did not know we were coming. We found that suitable recruitment and retention procedures were in place. This meant the provider ensured people using the service received care, support and treatment from staff that had been recruited and trained in a suitable and safe way. A new member of staff told us, 'They were very thorough with the interview process, I was very impressed. I found them professional and efficient.'

We had not received any complaints or concerns from people using the service at the time of our inspection.

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. We visited AMG Nursing and Care Services in order to up date the information we hold and to establish that the needs of people using the service were being met. The visit was short notice meaning we called the provider the day before our visit to tell them we were coming. We spoke with five people using the service and three staff about how the service was delivered and the quality of service provision.

People spoke well of the service, one person using the service told us, 'They are excellent, I can't fault them.' A relative said, 'They are brilliant, they encourage, support and help us in any way they can.' Another person using the service said, 'They always say 'good morning', ask me what I want, stay the correct time and arrive when they are due.'

People told us they were able to see their care records and confirmed that care and support were discussed with them. One person said, 'The book is useful we can always check to see what has happened. It is a good point of reference.' The staff told us that care records were useful and they gave them all the necessary information to deliver appropriate care. One staff member said, 'They are invaluable and they ensure we do what is required.'

People using the service confirmed they could speak with the staff if they had a concern or a complaint. This meant people felt able to voice their concerns and were listened to. One relative said, 'The office staff are very nice. They always answer the phone and help in any way they can, nothing is too much trouble.'

We viewed staff files during our visit and found that the organisation had a suitable process for recruitment, supervision and training. We looked at ways in which the home assessed it own quality and safety and saw suitable systems were in place.
