During a routine inspection

We sampled care files of three people who were living at The Respite House. We found each person had an assessment of care needs either under a Care Programme Approach (CPA) assessment or Standard Tool for Assessment of Risk (STAR). Additional individualised personal plans were also implemented to ensure day to day care needs were assessed and delivered.

We spoke with two people who were staying at The Respite House. Comments included: "The staff are good, it's been good here", " I have no complaints at all" and "I know the staff here are brilliant at their job, they look after me great, its just what I need".

We saw people who used the service were able to access food and drink as they required, to maintain a balanced nutritional intake. The registered manager explained that the weekly food budget had been increased to ensure fresh and good quality foodstuffs were purchased.

Staff who worked at The Respite House had detailed policy and procedure guidance to follow in the event of any safeguarding incident. We spoke with two people who used the service who said: "I do feel safe here, I have no issue at all with the staff or anyone else who lives here" and "I think the staff look after you here, you feel safe".

We were able to speak with two staff members during the visit who were very positive about the support and leadership they received from their line manager.

We found appropriate systems in place to monitor the quality of the service provided.

During a routine inspection

We sampled the care files of all six people who were living at The Respite House during the inspection. We found that each person had an assessment of care needs either under a Care Programme Approach assessment or STAR risk assessment.

We reviewed six care plans and noted that when any changes in care needs had happened these were documented but not dated or signed, from the initial assessment of needs.

We spoke with two people who lived at Respite House. Comments included: "The staff here have saved my life, they are great, its been so good for me here", "The staff here are fair, I have no complaints at all and " I know the staff here are brilliant at their job, they look after me great".

Each person who was receiving respite care came to the home with an assessment completed in regards to the administration of medication. They had been assessed by the community teams as to the capability of self administering medication or if they required some level of support.

We found that there was appropriate staffing levels to meet the needs of the people who used the service. We reviewed staffing rotas and saw that there was sufficient staff allocated per shift. We saw when staff were unavailable for duty at short notice, bank staff, employed either at the home or by the provider, were made available.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who use the service, one said, 'I come here every three months, coming here keeps me out of hospital. I am very forgetful and dealing with my medication worries me. When I am here the staff gives me my tablets and it's a big relief for me, it takes the pressure off me'.

Another person said, 'I am going to start coming here more often. The staff are very good, they listen to you and they know if some thing is wrong and if you are not happy. This person also commented on the meals, saying, 'The food is very good, there is lots of choice'.
