During a routine inspection

People told us they were well looked after and had everything they needed. One person told us, 'Staff are really nice, they ask and don't tell me what to do. They're good with the residents who are less able. I've never seen any staff be rude or nasty to anyone.' Another person said, 'I am happy here, the carers are good, couldn't ask for more.'

Relatives told us they were very happy with the service provided. One relative said, "I feel mum's privacy and dignity are respected." They told us they could raise any concerns if needed and the manager would listen and take action. Relatives told us they felt involved and visited regularly.

There was a safe system in place for the recruitment of staff. Staff received an induction and were trained appropriately to meet the needs of the people.

The environment was clean and tidy and we saw rooms which had been vacated had been refurbished before the next person moved in. There were monitoring systems in place to ensure service quality and performance.

We observed care staff were attentive to people's needs and their interaction with people was friendly, respectful and professional.

The home was kept clean and free from odour. People who lived at the home were well presented and well groomed.

One person told us, 'The home is lovely, so clean and homely.'

We saw people were given choices in how they wished to spend their day and were encouraged to join in a programme that offered both group and one-to-one activities each weekday.

We observed people were given a good choice of hot and cold food from a menu and were able to have a cooked breakfast if they wished. Refreshments were available throughout the day.

22 March 2011

During an inspection looking at part of the service

A visit was undertaken to follow up on actions taken by the provider for issues outstanding from the last report. There were no comments from people who use the service. However we were told the food had improved and systems had been put in place to continue monitoring the nutritional value.

The Person in charge told us the nurses had reassessed everyone's needs to make sure they had use of the right equipment when eating.

We were told the care plans had been reviewed in June 2011 and there were good improvements which reflected people needs.

We were told by the provider actions had been taken to ensure to protect people if issues arise.

We were told by the provider that nurses were wearing tabards to highlight they were not to be disturbed and this was in line with the new medication policy.

The person in charge told us that systems, policies and procedures were in place to make sure records were completed correctly. However some medication records had not been completed and sufficient details were missing.

People we spoke to told us they like living in the home, they felt safe and staff were very good to them. We spoke to relatives of the people who use the service who said, 'the staff are very good and my relative is as happy as they could be here." Another relative told us they were happy with the care their family member had received.

People like the independence of having their own flat where they can make drinks, food and receive visitors if they wish

Sometimes there were problems with the laundry, however if things went missing people told us the items would soon be back with the rightful owner.

People said they liked the food it was lovely and there were good choices, they could have their own groceries delivered if they wanted.

One person said they administered their own medication, although they could ask for help if they needed it

On the day of our visit a relative told us they wanted to make a complaint. The manager acted promptly and resolved the issue; the person said they were happy with the outcome.
